Inklings Chemistry: adaptive chemistry problem sets answered on screen
Effective Date: October 9, 2026
Last Updated: October 9, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes the data practices of Inklings Chemistry (the “App”), an iOS and iPadOS application that generates chemistry problem sets a student answers on the device and grades them automatically.
The short version: the App collects nothing, transmits nothing, and makes no network connections of its own. It does store your student's progress, but only on your own device, where it stays. The one thing that can take you out of the App is a recommended video, which opens in YouTube or Safari only when you tap it.
1. Scope
This policy applies to the App when installed on an Apple iOS or iPadOS device. It covers use by students and by the parents, guardians or teachers who set the App up and supervise it.
2. Information We Collect
We collect nothing. The App contains no code that sends information anywhere, and no server exists for it to send information to. Specifically, the App does not collect, receive, transmit or have access to:
- Any personal information (name, age, date of birth, email address, phone number, physical address, or any other identifier).
- Any device information or persistent identifiers (IDFA, IDFV, device serial number, advertising identifier, IP address, MAC address, or any other unique device or network identifier).
- Location data of any kind, precise or coarse.
- Usage data, analytics, telemetry, crash reports, session data, or behavioural information.
- Photos, videos, audio, camera input, microphone input, or any biometric data. The App does not request or use the camera or the microphone.
- Contacts, calendar entries, the photo library, or any other content from the device.
- Account credentials or login information. The App has no accounts and no sign-in.
- Cookies, advertising identifiers, or any tracking technology.
3. Information Stored On Your Device
So that a student's work carries on from one problem set to the next, the App saves the following in its own private storage area on your device. None of it is transmitted, and none of it is visible to us or to anyone else:
- The name you type for each student. This is whatever you choose to enter; it may be a first name, an initial or a nickname, and the App works exactly the same if it is left blank.
- Each student's progress: which topics have been attempted, how many problems were right and wrong, which topics are mastered, and which are currently being practised.
- The problem sets and tests that have been generated, the answers your student typed or picked on them, when each was started and submitted, and the record of which problems were marked wrong.
- Your student's rewards: XP, rank, streak and trophies.
- If you enter them for progress updates, your mobile number and email address.
- Problem set preferences such as the number of problems and pages per sheet.
- If you choose to set a parent PIN, its one-way SHA-256 hash. The PIN itself is never written to storage and cannot be recovered from what is stored, by us or by anyone else. No PIN is set unless you set one.
- A count of how many times the App has been opened, and the date a progress update was last sent. They are a number and a date and nothing more.
- A list of which pictures have already played their animation, so each plays only once. It names pictures, not people.
This information is written to the App's private container on the device. Removing the App deletes all of it permanently. You can also erase it from inside the App at any time using Settings → Reset all progress.
4. Recommended Videos
For each topic the App lists one to three recommended videos on YouTube. The list is part of the App itself; showing it involves no network connection. When you tap a video, the App asks iOS to open that video's public web address, and it opens in the YouTube app or, if that is not installed, in Safari. The address is the same for everyone and contains nothing about you or your student.
Once a video is open you are using YouTube, a service run by Google, and not the App. YouTube's own terms and privacy policy apply there, including its rules on age, and anything YouTube records is outside our knowledge and control. The App does not embed YouTube, show web pages inside itself, or receive anything back from YouTube. Nothing opens unless you tap it, and no video is needed to use the rest of the App.
5. Backups
If you back up your device to iCloud or to a computer, that backup includes the App's stored data, in the same way it includes data from every other app you use. Those backups are handled by Apple and by you under your own device settings. We have no access to them and receive nothing from them.
6. Progress Updates by Text or Email
The App never sends a message itself. When you tap Text it now or Email it now, the App opens the standard iOS Messages or Mail window with the update filled in, and nothing is sent unless you tap Send there. If you set up an automation in Apple's Shortcuts app, the App's Get Progress Update action hands the summary to that shortcut, and your own Messages or Mail account sends it to the number or address you chose. In both cases the message goes through Apple's or your email provider's service, as any message you send yourself does; we receive nothing.
7. Printing and Sharing
Problem sets are rendered into a PDF on the device. When you choose to print or share one, the App hands that PDF to the standard iOS print or share sheet, and it goes wherever you send it — your printer, your files, an email, a message. That happens only when you ask for it, the destination is entirely your choice, and the App plays no part beyond handing the file over. A temporary copy of the PDF may be written to the App's temporary folder to make sharing possible; the system clears that folder, and deleting the App removes it.
8. How We Use Information
Because nothing is collected or received, there is no use of information by us. Everything stored on the device is used solely to decide which problems to put on the next problem set and to show progress to the parent.
9. Sharing and Disclosure
We share nothing, because we hold nothing. No information is disclosed to any third party under any circumstances. There is no sharing with analytics providers, advertising networks, cloud services, educational partners or researchers, and no sale, rental or licensing of data. The App makes no network connections of its own for any purpose.
10. Third-Party Services, Analytics and Advertising
The App contains no third-party analytics, no advertising frameworks, no social-media components and no in-app purchases. It depends only on Apple's own operating-system frameworks, which do not report anything to us. Its only link to an outside service is the list of recommended YouTube videos described in section 4, which you open yourself.
11. Children's Privacy
The App is intended to be set up and supervised by a parent, guardian or teacher, and is used by children under that supervision. It is designed so that no information about a child can leave the device: nothing is collected, and nothing is transmitted. Because no personal information is ever collected or shared, the notice, verifiable parental consent and data-access obligations that the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and similar laws place on operators are not triggered. The recommended videos open outside the App, on YouTube, and whether a child watches them is for the supervising adult to decide. A parent who wishes to remove everything a child has done can do so at any time by resetting progress in Settings or by deleting the App.
12. Data Retention
Data stays on your device until you remove it. We retain nothing, because nothing reaches us. There is no server, no database, no cloud storage and no user account anywhere.
13. Security
Stored data is held in the App's private container, protected by the device's own sandboxing and, where you have a passcode set, by the device's file encryption. A parent PIN, if you set one, is stored as a one-way hash rather than as the PIN itself. Because nothing is transmitted, there is no data in transit to intercept.
14. Your Rights
Rights to access, correct, export or delete personal information generally apply to data held by an operator. We hold none. Everything the App stores is already in your hands: you can read it in the App, change it in the App, and delete it in the App or by removing the App.
15. Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new “Last Updated” date. Material changes will be described plainly rather than buried.
16. Contact
Questions about this policy, or about privacy in the App, can be sent to NewInklings@proton.me, and will be answered by a person.
